UNESCO Chair for the Prevention and Sustainable Management of Geo-Hydrological Hazards, University of Florence, ltaly Date & Venue of the Symposium: The Symposium will be organized during the period of 10 – 12 December 2019. Arrivai date in Egypt shall be scheduled on 9 of December and Departure from Egypt 13th of December 2019.

The Symposium will take piace in an exclusive cruise on the Nile between Luxor (check-in 9th of December) and Assuan (check-out 13th of December)

The Symposium is organized in sessions showing case studies from different parts of the world, sharing experiences in heritage conservation, under various climatic and hazardous contexts.

1. General Session – Key notes having generai interest (satellite applications; monitoring; advanced modeling; innovative geophysical investigation; foundations; climate change; weathering; etc.)
2. Case Studies – Detailed investigations on various sites affected by rapid and slow geo-hazards.

Highlights
Heritage represents the legacy of humankind on the planet Earth. lt witnesses millennia of people adaptation to their environment, as demonstrated in many sites, monuments and cultura! landscapes.
Monuments and vestiges are continuously impacted and altered by several internal and external factors, both natural and anthropogenic, with rapid (i.e. earthquakes, landslides, floods, debris flows) and/or slow onset (i.e. geologica! and geotechnical subsidence, soil and coastal erosion, sinkholes, hydro-geological conditions, climate change).
In this context, geoscience discipline and affiliateci empirica! research studies and technology may play an essential role in the conservation and management of cultura! properties. The relevance and potential of these areas as learning platforms was not fully recognized in the past. Nowadays, contribution of geosciences is increasingly acknowledged as the need for inter-disciplinary approaches, which would bring together art science, history, management and socio-economie concerns, has become more and more apparent. lf conservation is the management of change, the modification of urban systems and/or environmental conditions of many sites worldwide, are nowadays posing serious threats to their preservation. The major outcomes of such new school of thought are the many mitigation projects against geohazards, that maintain integrity and authenticity of heritage through advanced scientific investigation involving the natural processes, coupled with conservation approaches mainly based on traditional knowledges and sustainable practices.

Traditional knowledge entails not only the use of traditional materials but also the recovery techniques and expertise, having locai relevance, also to ensure the capability of locai population to maintain conservation works with time. Symposium: The Symposium is organized in sessions covering the innovation and advances in science and technology on geohazards mitigation in heritage sites from ali over the world. The sessions will highlight the diversity in mitigation measures under various type of geohazards, different countries and variety of culture. Plenary Sessions: Keynotes having generai interest (satellite applications; monitoring; advanced modelling; innovative geophysical investigation; foundations; climate change; weathering; etc.).

Thematic Sessions
Case studies on detailed investigations and mitigation measures on various sites affected by rapid and slow geo-hazards. Particular focus will be on the application of traditional knowledges in mitigation. Application & Selection: Who can apply?
The Symposium is mainly addressed (not exclusively} to Conservators and Managers of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and of Monuments, Sites and Cultura I Landscapes affected by geo-hazards, as well as experts of geosciences in generai.
Participation will be limited. Priority is given to candidates presenting and submitting case studies concerning Heritage conservation under geo-hazards and geo-environmental threats. The selection will be operateci by the Organizing Committee. How to Apply: Applicants shall fili the registration form at ASRT website (www.asrt.sci.eg) and upload the following:

3. Abstract (only for potential speakers) Proceedings: Author (s) of the selected abstract shall submit a full paper by 30 November 2019. Ali papers shall be reviewed for the publication of a book with an lnternational Publishing Company. Preliminary agreement is made with Springer Verlag. The book will be linked to global research engine and hubs of citation index such as Web of Science (151), EI-Compendex, and Scopus.

Upon request of the applicant, full grant including travel and accommodation or partial grant covering only accommodation are available for speakers submitting full paper presenting case study related to the theme/topic of the Symposium.
